Tabling a bill

The official act by which a government or private member’s bill is registered with a chamber of Parliament.

Tabling gives a proposed text formal parliamentary existence and results in its registration, numbering and publication. It follows the required preparation for the type of bill and normally precedes referral to a committee. It does not guarantee that the text will be scheduled, debated or adopted.

A private member’s bill is registered by the Assembly and referred to the competent committee.

Tabling a text is not the same as adopting it or placing it immediately on the agenda.
