Relative majority

A relative majority, sometimes called a plurality, identifies the option or candidate with the highest number of votes. It is used only where the applicable rules allow it, often after earlier rounds requiring a stronger threshold. It must not be confused with a simple majority of votes cast.

In a later ballot, a candidate may be elected by receiving more votes than each rival without receiving over 50%.

A relative majority does not necessarily mean more than half of the votes.
