Proxy vote
A strictly regulated authorisation allowing one parliamentarian to vote on behalf of another who is unable to attend.
Proxy voting is an exception to the constitutional principle that parliamentary votes are personal. It is permitted only for specified reasons and must be formally registered. One member may normally hold only one proxy, and the vote is counted in the same way for both parliamentarians.
An MP on an authorised mission gives a registered proxy to a colleague for a recorded vote.
A proxy is not a political group instruction or a permanent transfer of the parliamentary mandate.
