Private member’s bill

A proposition de loi may be tabled by an MP or senator and is subject to constitutional admissibility rules, particularly financial admissibility. If placed on the order of business, it is examined in committee and public sitting like other legislation. It may become law after adoption by Parliament and the remaining constitutional stages.

A cross-party group of MPs tables a bill to change an existing statutory rule.

In French procedure, a private member's bill is distinguished from a Government bill by who initiates it.
