Parliamentary committee

A group of MPs responsible for preparing legislation, gathering information and scrutinising public policy.

A parliamentary committee carries out detailed work that cannot all be conducted in plenary. It examines bills and amendments, holds hearings and contributes to oversight of the Government. Committees may be standing bodies or temporary bodies created for a specific purpose.

The Law Committee hears the minister and examines amendments before the bill reaches a public sitting.

A committee is part of Parliament, not a ministry or an administrative authority.
