Oral question

A question put by an MP to a Government member during a sitting specifically organised for oral questions.

An oral question allows an MP to raise a defined public-policy issue directly with a minister. The MP presents the question, the minister answers and the procedure may permit a reply. The exchange is public and contributes to scrutiny but does not itself produce a vote.

An MP asks a minister in the chamber about the continuation of a local public service.

Not every oral question is part of the high-profile Questions to the Government session.
