Motion of no confidence

A motion of no confidence enables MPs to challenge the Government's political responsibility under Article 49 of the Constitution. It must satisfy signature and timing requirements and is adopted only by an absolute majority of all members of the National Assembly. If adopted, the Prime Minister must submit the Government's resignation to the President of the Republic.

Opposition MPs table a motion after the Government invokes Article 49.3.

Only votes in favour count towards the constitutional threshold; abstentions do not support the motion.

Can be decided only by the National Assembly

Requires an absolute majority of all MPs

Adoption forces the Government to resign
