Member of the French National Assembly

A député, often rendered as MP in context, is elected by direct universal suffrage. MPs sit in committees and public sittings, table bills and amendments, debate and vote. Their mandate is national and cannot legally be made imperative by voters, a party or a parliamentary group.

An MP is not a member of the Government, even when belonging to the governing majority.
