Legislative article

A legislative article structures the operative content of a government bill, private member's bill or enacted law. During parliamentary consideration, MPs examine and amend articles individually before voting on the text as a whole. An article may contain several numbered paragraphs, known in French parliamentary drafting as alinéas.

Article 2 of a bill creates a new obligation and is amended before being adopted.

A legislative article is a provision of a text, not a press article or a constitutional article unless specifically stated.
