CIVIX · partial prerender

Lapsed amendment

An amendment that has become moot because an earlier decision removed or changed the wording on which it depended.

An amendment lapses when a prior vote makes its object disappear or renders its wording incompatible with the text now under consideration. The chair records that it has become moot, so no separate vote is held. It is neither rejected by MPs nor withdrawn by its author.

After a clause is deleted, amendments seeking to alter one of its paragraphs lapse.

A lapsed amendment is not counted as a vote against the proposal.
