Joint committee

A committee of seven MPs and seven senators convened to seek a common text when the two chambers disagree.

The French commission mixte paritaire is a joint committee composed of seven members from each chamber, with alternates. It may be convened after disagreement between the National Assembly and the Senate to propose compromise wording on provisions still under discussion. Its text must then be approved by both chambers and is not itself the final enactment.

After the chambers adopt different versions of a bill, a joint committee agrees compromise wording.

The committee proposes a compromise; it does not finally enact the law on its own.

Equal representation from both chambers

Deals with provisions still in dispute

Its compromise requires parliamentary approval
