French Senate

The chamber of the French Parliament representing territorial communities, whose members are indirectly elected.

The French Senate considers and votes on legislation, scrutinises the Government and evaluates public policy alongside the National Assembly. Senators are elected indirectly and constitutionally represent territorial communities. The Senate participates in the legislative shuttle but cannot bring down the Government through a motion of no confidence.

The Senate adopts a different version of a bill and sends it back to the National Assembly.

The Senate and National Assembly have different constitutional roles and methods of election.
