French National Assembly
The directly elected chamber of the French Parliament, made up of MPs and able to hold the Government politically accountable.
The French National Assembly examines legislation in committee and plenary, passes laws, scrutinises the Government and evaluates public policy. Its 577 members are elected by direct universal suffrage. In specified legislative disagreements it may have the final say, and it is the only chamber that can bring down the Government through a motion of no confidence.
The National Assembly examines a bill at first reading and then transmits it to the Senate.
The National Assembly is one chamber of Parliament and is not the Government.
