Explanation of vote
A speech in which an MP or political group publicly explains the reasons for a voting position.
An explanation of vote presents the political reasoning behind support, opposition or abstention. It may take place before an important vote or at another point provided by the organisation of the debate. The speech appears in the record but remains distinct from the legally recorded voting position.
Before a formal vote, each group’s speaker explains how and why the group intends to vote.
An explanation is political speech and does not replace the vote recorded in the official result.
