Amendment

A proposal to delete, add or rewrite part of a bill while it is being considered by Parliament.

An amendment allows the Government, a committee or a member of Parliament to propose a precise change to a text under consideration. It may be tabled for committee stage or a public sitting and must comply with constitutional and procedural admissibility rules. If adopted, its operative wording becomes part of the text being debated.

An MP tables an amendment to add a reporting requirement to a clause of a bill.

An amendment changes an existing text; it is not a separate bill.
